Adult Flute Choir

Lori Akins

Thirty-three flutists from around the world played in the new Adult Flute Choir, having signed up during the early registration period. From piccolo to contrabass, the flutists met for four rehearsals, all conducted by Lori Akins, and performed as part of Sunday’s lobby concert. The program included Ryohei Hirose’s “Blue Train,” Kelly Via’s “Arirang from Three Korean Folk Songs” and “By Kell’s Waters,” Ann Cameron Pearce’s arrangement of “Spanish Love Song,” Georg Friedrich Handel’s “Arrival of the Queen of Sheba,” Franz Schubert’s Allegro from Symphony No. 5, and Kelly Drouillard’s “Emerald Hills and Sapphire Seas.”

The performance of Drouillard’s piece was its first at an Annual National Flute Association Convention. I performed in its Michigan premiere and enjoyed playing it again as a member of this flute choir. I also was Drouillard’s first flute teacher; she subsequently studied with fellow-NFA member Rebecca Lisle Paluzzi.

The new Adult Flute Choir will also be an annual event at future conventions.
