From East to West: World Music Concert

Thursday ended with “From East to West: World Music Concert,” featuring Burak Besir, flute; Ayse Taspinar, piano; and Dimitris Jimmy Mahlis, oud-guitar. After a long day of attending workshops and performances, audience members most certainly got a second wind at Besir’s recital. The diversity of the program, which included classical, jazz, and traditional Turkish music and compositions by Basir himself, kept listeners anticipating what would come next. As a master of both the modern flute and the Turkish ney flute, Besir changed from one to the other effortlessly and sometimes fused Eastern and Western sounds within the same piece.

For instance, in one of his fusion pieces on modern flute, he used extended techniques like pitch bends and quarter-tones to mimic the sound of the ney. His modern flute performances featured technical brilliance and fluid lyricism. The audience truly enjoyed this first-class performance.
