Lois Schaefer was awarded the NFA’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 1993 convention. A member of the NFA Board of Directors and the Piccolo Committee and coordinator of the 1993 NFA Piccolo Artist Competition, she played principal piccolo with the Boston Symphony for 25 years until her retirement at the end of the 1989-90 season. She continued to teach and coach aspiring young flutists; she was on the faculty of the New England Conservatory starting in 1965 and on the faculty of the Boston Conservatory. She studied at the New England Conservatory with Georges Laurent and in 1986 received the Outstanding Alumni Award. She received her bachelor’s degree in 1946 and was the first recipient of the prestigious Artist Diploma the following year. Her other teachers included Frank Horsfall and Sebastian Caratelli. She was assistant principal flute in the Chicago Symphony Recording Symphony and the Columbia Records Symphony Orchestra before joining the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Schaefer appeared as soloist with the Chicago Symphony, Boston Pops Orchestra, Boston Symphony, and many area community orchestras. She recorded for the MGM, Allegro, and Connoisseur labels.
