New Voices in Low Flute Repertoire (2021–Present)

Aug 3, 2026, 19:20 PM by Noah Cline

Discovering Contemporary Music for Alto, Bass, Contrabass, and Beyond

One of the most exciting developments in the low flute community has been the remarkable growth of new repertoire in recent years. Following the creative surge that emerged after the COVID-19 pandemic, composers, performers, commissioners, and publishers have continued to expand the artistic possibilities of the alto, bass, contrabass, and other members of the low flute family.

To celebrate this flourishing repertoire, the NFA Low Flutes Committee launched this community-driven initiative highlighting works composed or published since approximately 2021. The collection began with recommendations from committee members and continues to grow through contributions from performers, composers, educators, publishers, and other members of the low flute community. Contributors are invited to share not only information about each work, but also why they believe it is an important addition to the contemporary low flute repertoire.

Each recommendation includes practical information about the work—such as instrumentation, duration, publication details, publisher, and available recordings—along with a personal reflection from the contributor. Some pieces were commissioned or premiered by the contributor, while others have become favorites through performance, teaching, or recent discovery. Together, these recommendations reflect the enthusiasm, experiences, and generosity of a community eager to share music that deserves to be heard. We hope this collection not only helps you discover new repertoire, but also connects you with the stories and people behind it.

Rather than serving as an exhaustive catalog, this collection is intended to be a living resource—one built by the community, for the community. Whether you are searching for recital repertoire, chamber music, flute choir works, or music for your students, we hope this guide helps you discover new composers, explore fresh repertoire, and continue expanding the possibilities of the low flute family.

About the Work
Hermanas is a vibrant contemporary duet for alto and bass flute that blends Latin American rhythmic and melodic influences with an intimate, energetic, and celebratory character. Commissioned by Rose Bishop and Heather Neuenschwander.

Why It's Recommended

Two committee members independently recommended Hermanas for its fresh musical language, engaging writing, and important contribution to the growing low flute duet repertoire.

"There are a few big reasons to love Hermanas. Low-flute repertoire is historically small, so a dedicated alto and bass flute duet is already a major contribution. Mena brings a fresh compositional voice, weaving her Cuban-American roots into modern classical writing while balancing rhythmic drive with warm, expressive lyricism."
