Song of the Angels Flute Orchestra Flute Choir

Song of the Angels Flute Orchestra

This group from Los Angeles, conducted by Frederick Staff, has a wonderful sense of ensemble with superb balance and blend and a wide dynamic range. The bookends of their program featured David Shostac as soloist in lyrical, yet powerful performances. Song of the Angels' program included Vivaldi's Spring Concerto (from The Four Seasons), Mahler's Adagietto from Symphony No. 5, and Vivaldi's Il Gardellino (The Goldfinch Concerto). Their complement of instruments included piccolo, flute, alto, bass, contrabass, and Roland Tso performing on the double contrabass. The addition of the double contrabass on the Mahler was wonderful. Although very few notes were scored for it, the instrument's added texture really made those few notes count, inspiring goosebumps with the wonderful blend into the tonal fabric of the ensemble.
