Voices from the Deep Concert

I arrived in time to hear the last two pieces on the Voices from the Deep Concert. Three for Two ("Rock On," "Lament for Sarah," "Sassy") was performed by Paige Dashner Long on contrabass and Peter Sheridan on alto flute. The individual performances and ensemble playing between Long and Sheridan was outstanding.

The highlight of the concert was the final piece performed by the Low Flutes Express: the world premiere of a newly commissioned piece called Voices from the Deep by Alexandra Molnar-Suhajda. This lovely piece was written in five movements (Aubade, Balletto Pensiero, the Temple in Cherry Blossom Time, Wondrous Love, Valse de bravoure). Never have I seen such an impressive collection of altos, basses, contrabasses, contra alto, double contra altos, and double contrabass flutes! It was like a forest of flutes!

The ensemble included luminaries of the flute world, including Alexa Still, Eva Amsler, George Pope, Nora Lee Garcia, and Peter Sheridan, along with many other talented players. Although Voices from the Deep can be performed with as few as five or six players, a chamber performance of the piece would pale in comparison to that luscious sound of more than 30 big flutes!
