The Ped-Comm Fix-it Shop

The Ped-Comm Fix-it Shop was offered by the Pedagogy Committee as a question-and-answer session for teachers (and students) seeking tips and suggestions for more successful teaching and learning. The panel consisted of Stacey Steele, Deb Johnson, Kathy Blocki, Barbara Ogar, and Rebecca Hovan.

The audience was asked to write down pedagogical questions for the panel; Wendy Kumer, moderator, sorted the questions into categories and directed questions to the panelists. Among topics were how to teach vibrato, double tonguing, flutter tonguing, proper embouchure, and breathing/breath support. Each panelist had an opportunity to address each topic, providing a wide spectrum of ideas and approaches. Kumer kept things moving along at a good pace, never allowing any the discussion to become bogged down or stagnant. Following the more lengthy discussion, the session concluded with a "lightning round," in which Kumer rapid-fired questions to the panelists who were instructed to give a one word/one sentence response. Approximately 75 to 100 people attended this event.
