Gala Concerts: Thursday and Friday

Rachel Brown

The Gala Concerts on Thursday and Friday were somewhat less splashy than I remember of other conventions, but both featured very nice performances.

It is remarkable that the historical flutes have conquered the Americans. A few years ago it would have been unthinkable that the Thursday Gala Concert would feature Rachel Brown on an original simple-system flute from 1829 and Jan De Winne on baroque flute! Also featured in Thursday’s concert were Gwyn Roberts, Leela Breithaupt, Michael Lynn, the Frost Flute Ensemble with soloist Trudy Kane, the IF Ensemble with soloist Shinjung Oh, ZAWA! (Claudia Anderson and Jill Felber), and harpsichordist Webb Wiggins.

Jan de Winn

Friday’s gala concert featured composer-flutists Wissam Boustany, Valerie Coleman, and Matthias Ziegler; Mary Kay Fink, Emma Resmini, the Throw Down of the Low Down Record-Setting Low Flutes (performing a world premiere by Greg Lutz), and PROJECT Trio.
