Dedicated to Diversity

Presented by the NFA Cultural Outreach Committee, this adventurous and diverse program featured works by Latino and African American composers. Performers were Valerie Coleman, Sonora Slocum, James Devoll, Jennifer Grim, Eileen Grycky, Paula Gudmundson, and Caen Thomason-Redus.

Valerie Coleman

Coleman opened the concert with a virtuosic and energetic interpretation of her own work, “Wish Sonatine.” Other works by Adolphus Hailstork, Ysef Lateef, Gabriela Lena Frank, Tania León, and Samuel Zyman provided diverse approaches to instrumentation, compositional styles, and the transmission of heritage. The concert came to an end with the Fantasia Mexicana by Samuel Zyman featuring vibrant and upbeat Mexican folk tunes for two flutes and piano.

Performers and audiences alike felt inspired by a friendly atmosphere of inclusion and reverence to the differences that unite us all.
