Saturday Late Nite: 21st Century Guide to the Flute and Guitar

Aisling Agnew and Matthew McAllister

The Agnew McAllister Duo, Irish flutist Aisling Agnew with Scottish guitarist Matthew McAllister, performed a varied and enjoyable program peppered with McAllister’s entertaining banter about the repertoire. The concert opened with Astor Piazzolla’s Libertango and the lesser known Oblivion. The composition Wens for solo flute by Veronique Vella, written for Agnew, alternated lyrical melodies with aeolian sounds and other extended techniques. Alan Thomas’ Sivi Grivi was based on Bulgarian folk dance music in mixed meter. Chris Stout’s beautiful Hamnataing was based on reels from the Shetland Islands. Sonata in G Major by Italian Baroque composer Pietro Locatelli was beautifully performed. An encore from Piazzola’s L’Histoire de Tango rounded out the program.
