Generations of Excellence Gala Concert

Ian Clarke

The Gala Concert opened with the Ruby All-Stars Flute Orchestra featuring NFA luminaries in performances of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, Ian Clarke’s Walk This Way, and Charles Delaney’s Scrambling for Flute Choir. The history of the NFA, its founders, and its National Service Award and Lifetime Achievement Award recipients was compiled into a multimedia presentation by Nancy Toff, this year’s NSA recipient. Flutist and composer Ian Clarke performed three of his compositions, including a flute trio in which he was joined by National Symphony Orchestra principal flute Aaron Goldman and Hungarian flutist Gergely Ittzes.

Jasmine Choi and Damare McGill

Vienna Philharmonic principal flute Jasmine Choi and Seattle Symphony principal flute Demare McGill joined forces with pianist Colette Valentine to perform Choi’s arrangement of Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins and Luigi Hugues’ Grand Concerto Fantasy on Themes from Un Ballo In Maschera by Verdi. Their elegant playing and exquisite technique were a joy to behold.

Finally, flutist Jim Walker and Free Flight performed an energetic set of their standards by longtime Free Flight pianist Mike Garson, including the touching Lullaby for Our Daughters, arranged by Jim Walker. A George Gershwin Medley rounded out their set.
