Orchestral Excerpt Aaron Goldman MC

Aaron Goldman led this year’s well-attended orchestral audition masterclass, which featured three students who won through the annual competition the opportunity to work with Goldman and cash prizes. Goldman offered very easy suggestions for quickly improving playing in an audition situation.

  • People tend not to play soft enough in an audition.
  • Get the full scores of the excerpts and make a notebook for yourself, so that you do not need to look up the word every time you prepare for an audition.
  • Keep a practice notebook of things that you like and that you do well, and try to do these things consistently.
  • Over-exaggerate the character of the music to gain the committee’s interest.
  • Remember the small room where you first warm up is not the room you are going to play your audition in.
