How We Got to Here

Jeff Dening’s presentation “How We Got Here” began with a touching tribute to flute historian and mentor David Shorey, whom we lost this year, and told of the evolution, mostly in Paris, of flutes by Böhm and Gordon from the ring flutes of the 1830s to the Louis Lot metal cylinder flutes that were adopted by the Paris Conservatory in 1860 when Louis Dorus received the appointment as professor of flute. Dening’s relaxed but informative presentation featured Power Point photos and physical antique examples and highlighted, particularly, Dorus’ contributions, especially the development of the closed G-sharp mechanism that bears his name.
