Kitty Lopez

Kitty Lopez’ Workshop La Flauta Mexicana involved the audience by inviting us to play with her wonderful Mariachi Corazon de Phoenix. Lopez displayed and briefly demonstrated Pre-Columbian instruments. She taught stylistic elements, which many flutists enthusiastically attempted while sightreading music traditionally learned by rote. With the option to play first or second flauta, nearly the entire room participated.

Handouts included parts to eight pieces, a discography of mariachi recordings with flute, and copies of Lopez’s article from the summer 2001 issue of The Flutist Quarterly.

Later, seeing “classmates,” we grinned and agreed how very much fun it had been!
