Flute Choir Showcase

The International Flute Orchestra

The first group to perform in the Flute Choir Showcase was The West Michigan Flute Orchestra, conducted by Darlene Dugan. It performed Hebrides Overture “Fingal’s Cave,” Op. 26 by Felix Mendelssohn, arranged by Rick Pierce. The next three pieces were NFA Convention premieres conducted by the composers, including Sicilienne by David Wells, Flint Hills Memories with movements Homesteaders, Lena Valley Quilting Bee, and Tornado Alley, by Darlene Dugan, and ‘Cross the Wide Missouri with movements Reflections in the Water and Shenandoah, by Kelly Via. The final piece was the rollicking Gogarty’s Pub from Lisa Le May’s composition Innes Glas Mor. The International Flute Orchestra, conducted by John Bailey, performed Nabucco Overture by Verdi, arranged by Shaul Ben-Meir; La Boutique Fantasque by Rossini, arranged by Shaul Ben-Meir; “Arirang” from Three Korean Folk Songs by Kelly Via; Russian Sailors’ Dance by Gliere, arranged by Shaul Ben-Meir; Four Japanese Folk Songs, arranged by Robert L. Cathey; and Spanish Dance by de Falla, arranged by Shaul Ben-Meir. La Boutique Fantasque is a set of four charming character pieces Overture, Dance Cosaque, Can Can, and Tarentella. Four Japanese Folk Songs include a drinking song, a love song, a work song, and a song descriptive of beautiful landscape. These are well-scored, and include a little flutter-tonguing and a short spoken section in the work song.
