Two fine collegiate flute choirs performed Friday at noon, the Dana Flute Ensemble led by Kathryn Umble and the West Virginia University Flute Choir led by Francesca Arnone. Both ensembles showed a high level of preparation and accuracy. Of particular interest were two premieres, a new arrangment by the composer of David Morgan’s Secret of the Gold Flower from 2005, and WVU alumna Nancy Galbraith’s Streaming Green (a world premiere), an exciting and rhythmically complex work. Keith Underwood (a West Virginia native) performed Mike Mower’s Scareso on alto flute with the group from West Virginia University. The concert was very well attended, with audience members sitting and standing in the general vicinity. The casual setting made announcements difficult, but the works were received with great enthusiasm.
