The National Flute Association will host its 40th Annual Convention at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada, August 9–12, 2012, with more than 3,000 flutists, composers, flute scholars, flute makers, music publishers, and flute enthusiasts from all over the world. The theme for this special anniversary NFA convention is “Rubies! Celebrating 40 Years of Artistry and Vision,” paying homage to the NFA’s long heritage as an organization that serves to inspire, enrich, and educate.
The NFA will honor Lifetime Achievement Award recipients Bonita Boyd and Betty Bang Mather, both luminaries of the flute world, and National Service awardee Nancy Toff, flute historian. Boyd will perform on Friday night’s Gala Concert and give a masterclass on orchestral excerpts. She and scholars Mather and Toff will be featured in convention presentations throughout the weekend, including the Lifetime Achievement Awards Gala Fundraising Dinner on Saturday, August 11.
The Thursday and Friday night Gala Concerts will feature Ian Clarke, Jim Walker, Claudia Anderson, Harvey Sollberger, and the Imani Winds. Performers on the Saturday night Concerto Gala concert will be Walfrid Kujala, Amy Porter, Linda Toote, Alexa Still, Aldo Baerten, and Peter-Lukas Graf. Ransom Wilson will conduct the orchestra and teach a masterclass on French music. The music continues late into the night with performances by jazz greats Jim Walker and Holly Hofmann.
Workshops and performances by top and rising stars in the flute world including Leone Buyse, Jasmine Choi, Robert Dick, Jill Felber, Wouter Kellerman, Demarre McGill, Greg Patillo, Catherine Ransom-Karoly, Carla Rees, Mimi Stillman, Peter Verhoyen, and Matthias Ziegler will be scattered throughout the festive birthday weekend. A wide variety of other concerts, competitions and workshops, and hundreds of exhibits by flute manufacturers, music and recording companies, and others will fill the four-day celebration. Details on the 14 competitions to be held as part of this convention can be found at nfaonline.org/NFA-Programs/Competitions/.
And don’t forget the flute choirs—there are more than 20 in the convention lineup, including the NFA High School, Collegiate, Professional and Opening flute ensembles, with conductors Eva Amsler, John Bailey, Clyde Mitchell, and Hal Ott. A special event is the world premiere, by the PFC, of the the winner of the NFA’s first-ever Flute Choir Composition Competition on Sunday afternoon.
