Jazz Flute Big Band and Collegiate Flute Choir: Two Exciting New NFA Competition and Performance Opportunities
The 2009 NFA convention in New York marks the debut of two new competitions: the Collegiate Flute Choir Competition and the Jazz Flute Big Band Competition. Also debuting in New York will be the Collegiate Flute Choir, composed of the winners of the new Collegiate Flute Choir Competition, which is open to undergraduate students. The Jazz Flute Big Band competition is open to all flutists who are NFA members.
The Collegiate Flute Choir will feature full-time undergraduate students (of any major), and involve them in an NFA competition and convention activities. This exciting muscial experience will offer a wonderful opportunity to meet and perform with others from different areas and schools.
The first biennial NFA Jazz Flute Big Band Competition will offer both aspiring and experienced jazz flutists the opportunity to perform in an organized jazz ensemble at NFA conventions. The ensemble will perform commissioned jazz arrangements written for piccolo/C flute/alto/bass flute sections, with a rhythm section (piano, bass, and drums). A select group of jazz soloists will be chosen from the winning contestants, to be featured on improvised solos during the performance.
The full Collegiate Flute Choir Competition repertoire and requirements for piccolo, alto, bass, and contra flutes, and the audition and repertoire requirements for the Jazz Flute Big Band Competition, will be posted soon under “competitions,” at the NFA Web site. For more information about the collegiate competition, contact Dorli McWayne, Collegiate Flute Choir Competition Coordinator. For more information about the jazz competition, contact Ali Ryerson, Jazz Flute Big Band Competition Coordinator. Entries for either competition must be postmarked by February 14, and received by February 21, 2009.
