The extraordinary French flutist Alain Marion died suddenly of a heart attack in the early morning of Sunday, August 16, 1988 while in Seoul, Korea. The extraordinary French flutist Alain Marion died suddenly of a heart attack in the early morning of Sunday, August 16, 1998 while in Seoul, Korea. Marion began his flute studies with Joseph Rampal at the Marseille Conservatoire, then studied in Paris with Jean-Pierre Rampal. In 1961, he was a prize winner at the International Music Competition in Geneva. During his career, Marion taught flute at the Paris Conservatoire, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and was both a teacher and director of the International Summer School at Nice, France. He was appointed first flute in the French Radio Chamber Orchestra in 1964 and was also a founding member of the Orchestre de Paris. He served as soloist with the Orchestra National de France, the English Chamber Orchestra, I Solisti Veneti, the Berlin and Leipzig Radio Orchestras, and others. Marion taught and performed around the world. In addition, he participated in researching and creating contemporary works conducted by Pierre Boulez in association with IRCAM the Ensemble Intercontemporain. Alain Marion was a featured soloist at the 1992 NFA Convention in Los Angeles, California. |
