NFA Competition Information

The competition deadline has passed. The NFA will notify competition entrants by e-mail in late April concerning their application status.

The National Flute Association holds 19 competitions to reward outstanding performers, composers, publishers, scholars, and entrepreneurs.

Among these are 15 performance competitions to select outstanding flutists to perform at the NFA convention as well as 4 non-performance competitions.

2017 General Competition Information and Rules and Regulations

The NFA will hold 15 competitions for its 45th annual convention in Minneapolis, MN, August 10-13, 2017. Please review the information below as well as the information for the specific competition that you wish to enter.

NFA Membership and Convention Registration
All flutists must be current NFA members (for the membership year ending July 31, 2017). Teachers of flutists who are entering the High School Soloist, Collegiate Flute Choir, High School Flute Choir, and Masterclass Performers competitions must also be current NFA members. To join or renew, go to Entrants chosen to perform or present at the convention, as well as the teachers referred to above, must renew their membership (for the membership year beginning August 1, 2017). Entrants must also register for the convention by July 25, 2017.

Application Process

All entrants must complete an application through DecisionDesk.

The application form, recordings/supplemental materials, and fees must be submitted by the date listed below. No late entries will be accepted.

Competition Recordings/Supplemental Materials
To ensure the anonymity of your entry, do not include your first name, last name, or initials when naming files you plan to upload. In addition, you may not post your competition recordings/supplemental materials on social media sites (Facebook, YouTube, etc.) prior to May 1, 2017. Editing a recording, including studio-produced effects, or talking during a recording is strictly prohibited.

No repertoire substitutions will be accepted. Carefully read all details related to required selections, including keys, opus numbers, movements, and publishers.

Competition Information
Entrants entering more than one competition must complete a separate application for each competition.

Entrants agree to appear at the 2017 convention in Minneapolis, MN (does not apply to Flute Choir Composition Competition entrants) at their own expense.  

Convention recordings may become part of the NFA archives.

Prize monies (where applicable) will be paid by check in U.S. dollars, not by wire transfer, or by other specialized financial services. Conversion of funds is the responsibility of each prize winner.

Entrants are expected to demonstrate the ability to represent the NFA in a professional manner, and shall exhibit appropriate behavior, attitude and demeanor toward judges, fellow contestants and others, and may be evaluated on those qualities.

Contestants may not contact or communicate in any way, directly or indirectly, with any competition judge before the competition commences or at any time prior to the announcement of the contest winners.

Competitions are subject to all rules and regulations on this page as well as the provisions stated on each individual applicable competition page.

Decisions of the judges are final.

Failure to abide by the rules and regulations above may result in disqualification from the competition.
