High School Flute Choir Competition

The High School Flute Choir Competition will select high school flutists to perform in the High School Flute Choir at the 2024 NFA Convention in San Antonio. All entrants must play the C flute selection. Entrants wishing to perform on piccolo must include the corresponding repertoire below. Entrants chosen to participate in the High School Flute Choir at convention may be requested to perform on alto and/or bass flute. Demonstrating proficiency on either or both instruments may increase your chances of being accepted into the ensemble. Accepted students will be asked to play an alto or bass flute if they have access to one or if their private teachers have access to one.

Competition Requirements*

  • AGE REQUIREMENT: All entrants must meet BOTH of the following requirements:
    • have been enrolled and in good standing as full time students in grades 9-12 or the equivalent during the 2023-2024 academic year.
    • be between the ages of 14 and 19 on the first day of the convention. Entrants may be required to show proof of age.
  • All flutists must be current NFA members at the time the entry is submitted. If chosen to perform or present during the convention, flutists must also be current members at the time of the convention and register for the convention by July 1, 2024. To join or renew, go to nfaonline.org/signup.

  • $65 entry fee (paid during submission process)

All entrants must submit their entry, upload recordings/supplemental materials, and pay competition and membership fees by 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time, Wednesday, February 14, 2024.

Recorded Round Repertoire

Each piece should be uploaded as a separate file in the following order. All uploaded files must be audio recordings. No videos are allowed.

Required repertoire for all applicants:

  • C Flute: Carl Reinecke, Sonata “Undine”, Op. 167, I. Allegro (any edition). Take the repeat.

Repertoire if entrant wishes to perform on piccolo, alto, bass, or contrabass:

  • Piccolo: Amanda Harberg, Sonata for Piccolo, II. Moderato, Dreamy (Theodore Presser)
  • Alto: Pierre Octave Ferroud, Trois Pieces, II. Jade (any edition)
  • Bass: Gary Schocker, What’s Old Is New, I. Serieusement (Theodore Presser)
  • Contrabass: Georg Philipp Telemann, Fantasia No. 6 in D Minor TWV 40:7, I. Dolce (any edition). Take both repeats.

All Recorded Round repertoire must be recorded with pre-recorded or live piano accompaniment.

Those entering this competition may also may also be eligible to apply for the Frances Blaisdell Scholarship, which provides $1500 toward NFA convention expenses.
