The National Flute Association holds 22 competitions to reward outstanding performers, composers, publishers, scholars, and entrepreneurs. Among these are 18 performance competitions to select outstanding flutists to perform at the NFA convention and four non-performance competitions. The NFA will hold 17 competitions for its 2025 convention. All recorded round materials must be performed WITH accompaniment unless otherwise specified. Live rounds at the 2025 NFA Convention in Atlanta will be presented with accompaniment unless otherwise specified. Please review the information below as well as the information for the specific competition that you wish to enter.
Accessibility
The NFA is committed to meeting the accessibility needs of all convention participants. Entrants who move forward in their competition will be asked if they have accessibility needs as part of the confirmation process so the NFA may provide the necessary support.
NFA Membership and Convention Registration
All flutists must be current NFA members at the time the entry is submitted. If chosen to perform or present at the convention, flutists must also be current members at
the time of the convention and register for the convention by July 1, 2025. To join or renew, go to nfaonline.org/signup.
Submission Process
- Contestants must complete a separate entry for each competition they wish to enter.
- The entry form, recordings/supplemental materials, and fees must be submitted by Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time unless otherwise specified on the individual competition page.
Competition Recordings/Supplemental Materials
- Editing a recording, including studio-produced effects, or talking during a recording is strictly prohibited.
- Do not post your competition recordings/supplemental materials on social media sites (Facebook, YouTube, etc.) prior to May 1, 2025.
- No repertoire substitutions will be accepted. Carefully read all details related to required selections, including
keys, opus numbers, movements, and publishers.
Rehearsal and Warm-Up Times for Solo Competitions
Each contestant for the live rounds of the solo competitions will receive a designated rehearsal time with pianist (if applicable) in the space the competition will be held. If rehearsals within the performance space are not possible due to scheduling conflicts, then ALL of the contestants will have their rehearsals in a comparable space. Any practice/rehearsal within the performance space outside of the assigned rehearsal timeslots is strictly prohibited.
A warmup/greenroom space will be provided for contestants to prepare in while other contestants are performing. Volunteer runners will bring contestants to the performance space when it is their turn.
General Competition Regulations
- Convention recordings may become part of the NFA archives.
- Contestants are expected to demonstrate the ability to represent the NFA
in a professional manner and shall exhibit appropriate behavior, attitude, and demeanor toward judges, fellow contestants, and others and may be evaluated on those qualities.
- Contestants may not contact or communicate in any way, directly
or indirectly, with any competition judge before the competition commences or at any time prior to the announcement of the contest winners.
- Competitions are subject to all rules and regulations on this page as well as the provisions stated on each individual applicable competition page.
- Decisions of the judges are final. No ties will be permitted.
- NFA will notify competition entrants by e-mail
in late April concerning their status.
Failure to abide by the rules and regulations above may result in disqualification from the competition.
