Piccolo Orchestral Audition & Masterclass Competition

This Competition will next be held at the 2025 NFA Convention.

The biennial Piccolo Orchestral Audition & Masterclass Competition will select three finalists will be chosen to perform a mock audition and perform in a masterclass for an orchestral piccoloist at the 2025 NFA Convention in Atlanta. Cash prizes of $1,000, $750, and $400 will be awarded. Previous first-prize winners in this competition are ineligible to compete again in this event.

Competition Requirements*

  • AGE REQUIREMENT: All entrants must be 30 years of age or younger by the last day of the convention (born on or after August 11, 1994). Entrants may be required to show proof of age.
  • All flutists must be current NFA members at the time the entry is submitted. If chosen to perform or present during the convention, flutists must also be current members at the time of the convention and register for the convention by July 1, 2025. To join or renew, go to nfaonline.org/signup.

All entrants must submit their entry, upload recordings/supplemental materials, and pay competition and membership fees by 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time, date TBA

Recorded Round Repertoire

Each piece should be uploaded as a separate file in the following order. All uploaded files must be audio recordings. No videos are allowed.

  • Ludwig van Beethoven, Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125, Mvt. 4, m. 343-390
  • Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov, Caucasian Sketches, Mvt. 4 “Procession of the Sardar”, m. 3 to rehearsal B
  • Dmitri Shostakovich, Symphony No. 6, Mvt. 1, 4 before rehearsal 9 until rehearsal 10
  • Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 36, Mvt. 3, 2nd measure of rehearsal E to 3 measures before rehearsal G 

All Recorded Round repertoire for this event must be recorded without any form of accompaniment.
