Low Flute Artist Competition

   

The triennial Low Flute Artist Competition is for outstanding players of low flutes. Six entrants will be chosen to compete at the 2025 NFA Convention in Atlanta. The NFA will provide a pianist. A floor microphone will be available for pieces performed on the bass flute. All repertoire must be performed on alto flute or bass flute. Cash prizes of $1,500, $750, and $400 will be awarded to the top three finalists.

Competition Requirements*

  • AGE REQUIREMENT: All entrants must be 22 years of age or older by the first day of the convention. Entrants may be required to show proof of age at the convention.
  • All flutists must be current NFA members at the time the entry is submitted. If chosen to perform or present during the convention, flutists must also be current members at the time of the convention and register for the convention by July 1, 2025. To join or renew, go to nfaonline.org/signup.
  • Completed entry form
  • Uploaded all files
  • $65 entry fee (paid during submission process)
  • Previous first-place winners of this competition are ineligible to compete again.

All entrants must submit their entry, upload recordings/supplemental materials, and pay competition and membership fees by 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time, Wednesday, February 12, 2025.

Recorded Round Repertoire

Each piece should be uploaded as a separate file in the following order. Movements may be uploaded separately if you choose. All uploaded files must be audio recordings. No videos are allowed. Please select 10-12 minutes of music from the following repertoire. Individual movements are allowed.

Select two pieces from the following list:

  • Tyson Davis, Absolute Zero for solo alto flute (Any edition)
  • Kristen Stoner, Elegy for solo alto flute (ALRY)
  • Gary Schocker, Sonata for a Lost Planet for alto flute and piano, I. Above, IV. Float (Any edition)
  • Catherine McMichael, Biakal Jouney: Sacred Cauldon for bass flute and piano (Any edition)

Final Round Repertoire

This repertoire will be presented at the 2025 NFA Convention in Atlanta. Each program should be 13-15 minutes. Please time your program carefully, as all contestants will be stopped after 15 minutes. Final round repertoire, including titles, movements, exact timings, composer’s dates, and publishers, must be included with your competition entry. Finalists will be bound by their original selections.
