Next Steps for the Orchestral Audition & Masterclass Competition

Entrants will be notified by Thursday, April 30, 2020 of the judges' decisions. Three finalists will be selected to submit a video recording of the final round excerpts. Please refer to the Recording Guidelines on the NFA Competition Information page. The finalists will be ranked and receive cash prizes of $1,000, $750, and $400 respectively. They will also receive online instruction from a master teacher. Upload your video recording here by Monday, August 3, 2020, 11:59 p.m. EDT.

The Orchestral Audition & Masterclass Competition is open to flutists who will be 30 years of age or younger by the last day of the convention (born on or after August 10, 1989). Entrants will be required to show proof of age at the convention. Three finalists will be chosen to perform a mock audition and perform in a masterclass for Emily Beynon at the 2020 NFA Convention. Cash prizes of $1,000, $750, and $400 will be awarded. Previous first-place winners of this competition are ineligible to compete.

Competition Requirements*

  • All flutists must be current NFA members at the time the entry is submitted. If chosen to perform or present at the convention, flutists must also be current members at the time of the convention and register for the convention by July 1, 2020. To join or renew, go to

All entrants must submit their entry, upload recordings/supplemental materials, and pay competition and membership fees by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, Tuesday, February 18, 2020.


Recorded Round Repertoire

Each piece should be uploaded as a separate file in the following order. All uploaded files must be audio recordings. No videos are allowed.

  • Johannes Brahms, Symphony No. 4 in E Minor, IV. Allegro energico e passionato,measure 93 through measure 105
  • Felix Mendelssohn, Symphony No. 4 in A Major, IV. Saltarello, measure 1 throughmeasure 34
  • Sergei Prokofiev, Classical Symphony, II. Larghetto, measure 9 through measure 16
  • Igor Stravinsky, Petrouchka (1947 edition), beginning to rehearsal 7 (no downbeat necessary)

Accompaniment is not required for this competition.
