Beyond Bach: Baroque Flute Repertoire by Female Composers

This session will explore original works and transcriptions of works for flute composed by women in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. We'll discuss the biographies, compositional style, and contributions to flute repertoire of female composers like Anna Bon, Wilhelmine von Bayreuth, Isabella Leonarda, Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, and/or others. Our discussion will include suggestions and resources for approaching the performance of these works in a historically-informed manner. Practical resources such as bibliographies and URL links to available manuscripts and musical scores, current recordings, and relevant performance practice resources will also be provided so that attendees may pursue their own performance and research of the works of these often overlooked composers.
