Matt Eakle Talks Music

Interview by Ali Ryerson

In this 50-minute interview, Ali Ryerson speaks with one of today’s most versatile flutists, Matt Eakle. With a career spanning more than 40 years, Eakle was the first wind player to share the front line with the famed “Dawg music” mandolinist, David Grisman. Eakle has spent his life exploring the musical worlds of bluegrass, gypsy jazz, Japanese, Indian, jazz, classical, and more. Eakle and Ryerson discuss everything from Papa Bach to jazz improvisation; from bluegrass to the Classical Indian tradition of improvisation; from Eakle’s time working with Jerry Garcia (lead guitarist of the Grateful Dead) to gypsy jazz. And they share their experiences with the great French jazz violinist, Stephane Grappelli. Tune into this conversation between Eakle and Ryerson, and you might even hear one (or both) blow some hot bluegrass licks!
