The NFA Blog

The NFA Blog is a space for flutists to share ideas, stories, and advice. Come here for posts from our staff, volunteers, committees, and members - all sharing their insights for the flute community.

In July 2024, we combined our existing blogs (The Committee Blog and the Community Blog) into one: The NFA Blog. This space will be a landing page for the flute community to share their insights. Check back each month for new posts!

Making the Most of the Exhibit Hall by Building Relationships

May 16, 2025, 20:41 PM by Noah Cline

From the NFA Commercial Members Committee

MFA-3337 (1)The relationship between instrument makers, publishers, flute centers, and flutists goes far beyond simple transactions. Flutists rely on businesses not just for instruments, but for tools that shape their sound, technique, and artistic identity. In turn, businesses listen closely to players’ feedback, using it to innovate and refine their offerings. This creates a unique partnership where trust, shared passion, and mutual respect drive both artistic and technical growth, with deeper understanding that promotes long-term growth for everyone.

How can we make the best use of our time in the exhibit hall?

Here are a few suggestions to help flutists of all levels meet over 50 vendors offering instruments, accessories, sheet music, and educational tools, all under one roof.

MFA-3242Explore a variety of instruments for students, from beginner flutes to advanced step-up models and the latest innovations.
This unique opportunity allows hands-on trials of headjoints, piccolos, altos, basses, and more. Speaking directly with each company helps us understand their distinct offerings and how they support our playing and growth. Connecting with expert instrument makers provides valuable insights and lasting relationships.

Use the Guidebook app:

  • Use the notes section to keep track of different options from each vendor.

  • Review the Exhibit Hall Tips section.

  • Participate in a game on the Guidebook app to connect with exhibitors and win a prize.

If you're looking for music, browse and make a list of things you want to buy in the future. Go to the publishers who have recordings of their music and take a listen. Check out next year’s competition repertoire, which many vendors feature. This is a great time to jump-start your practicing for next year’s competitions, as well as discovering new pieces. At the accessories booths, try on different items.

Keep a wish list: share this with families for upcoming milestones like birthdays, graduations, holidays (or combinations of these). Make your own “gift registry.”

Ask questions, try equipment, and seek advice. Be open to different options and information. Revisit these new ideas later after the convention, when you have time to process all you’re hearing, learning, and observing.

Watch social media and other outlets for opportunity announcements from our exhibitors in advance and during the convention. These might be free mini-lessons, merch, swag, or signings by artists or composers.

By forging partnerships within our community, we build mutual trust and shared value. The interrelationship among community members—whether they are entrepreneurs, customers, or supporters—creates a dynamic organization where everyone benefits.

It takes time, investment, and energy to cultivate these opportunities. Through continuous feedback and engagement, together we can shape products, services, and solutions that reflect our community’s true needs and aspirations.
