Collegiate Flute Choir Competition

2021 competitions are now closed. Repertoire requirements for next year are scheduled to be announced in August.

 

All 2021 NFA competitions will be held virtually!

The Collegiate Flute Choir Competition will select college flutists to perform in the Collegiate Flute Choir conducted by Lisa Garner Santa during the 2021 NFA Convention. All entrants must be full-time undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited college, university, or conservatory during the 2020-2021 academic year.

NEW in 2021: Entrants who wish to perform on alto flute, bass flute, or contrabass flute in the flute choir need only submit a recording of the corresponding repertoire. Those wishing to perform on piccolo are required to submit both the C flute and piccolo selections.

Coordinated by Sonja Giles, the winners of the Collegiate Flute Choir Competition will have the opportunity to:

  • receive flute choir music and practice tracks in April 
  • attend virtual rehearsals in May and June
  • record and submit their individual videos 
  • be a part of the virtual NFA Collegiate Flute Choir during the 2021 NFA convention in August

Competition Requirements*

  • All flutists must be current NFA members at the time the entry is submitted. If chosen to perform or present during the convention, flutists must also be current members at the time of the convention and register for the convention by July 1, 2021. To join or renew, go to nfaonline.org/signup.

  • $55 entry fee (paid during submission process)

All entrants must submit their entry, upload recordings/supplemental materials, and pay competition and membership fees by 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time, Sunday, February 28, 2021.

Recorded Round Repertoire

Each piece should be uploaded as a separate file in the following order. All uploaded files must be audio recordings. No videos are allowed.

  • C Flute: Georges Hüe, Fantaisie pour flute et piano (Billaudot) 

Entrants wishing to perform on piccolo in the flute choir must add the following to their audition recording. 

  • Piccolo: Vincent Persichetti, Parable for Solo Piccolo (Parable XII), op. 125 (Elian Vogel)

Entrants wishing to perform on alto flute, bass flute, or contrabass flute in the flute choir need only submit a recording of the corresponding repertoire (C Flute not required). 

  • Alto Flute: Valerie Coleman, Legends, I. Lin-Fa – The Lotus Lily and II. Dagda’s Harp (record this selection unaccompanied) (vcolemanmusic.com) 
  • Bass Flute: Valerie Coleman, Legends, I. Lin-Fa – The Lotus Lily and II. Dagda’s Harp (record this selection unaccompanied) (vcolemanmusic.com)  
  • Contrabass Flute: Valerie Coleman, Legends, I. Lin-Fa – The Lotus Lily and II. Dagda’s Harp (record this selection unaccompanied) (vcolemanmusic.com)

Due to the restrictions of COVID-19, all repertoire must be recorded without piano accompaniment.

  

* Competitions are subject to all rules and regulations on this page as well as the 2021 General Competition Information and Rules and Regulations. Incomplete entries will be subject to disqualification.

Those entering this competition may also may also be eligible to apply for the Frances Blaisdell Scholarship, which provides $1500 toward NFA convention expenses.
