Masterclass Performers Competition

All 2021 NFA competitions will be held virtually!

The Masterclass Performers Competition will select three college flutists to perform in masterclasses during the 2021 NFA Convention. This competition is open to any flutist who has been a full-time undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in an accredited college, university, or conservatory during the 2020-2021 academic year.

Competition Requirements*

  • All flutists must be current NFA members at the time the entry is submitted. If chosen to perform or present during the convention, flutists must also be current members at the time of the convention and register for the convention by July 1, 2021. To join or renew, go to nfaonline.org/signup
  • Completed entry
  • Uploaded files
  • $55 entry fee (paid during submission process)

All entrants must submit their entry, upload recordings/supplemental materials, and pay competition and membership fees by 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time, Tuesday, February 23, 2021.

Recorded Round Repertoire

Each piece should be uploaded as a separate file in the following order. All uploaded files must be audio recordings. No videos are allowed.

  • CPE Bach, Sonata in G Major, Wq. 123/H.550, I. Andante (Musica Rara or CD Sheet Music)
  • Paul Jeanjean, Études Modernes pour Flûte: #9 Andantino, beginning to measure 33 (Alphonse Leduc)
  • Lukas Foss, ed. Carol Wincenc, Three American Pieces for Flute and Piano, III. Composer’s Holiday (Carl Fischer)

Due to the restrictions of COVID-19, all repertoire must be recorded without piano accompaniment.

Masterclass Repertoire

Each entrant must include three choices for masterclass repertoire, in order of preference, to perform should they be selected as a winner of the competition. Titles, movements, composer names, composer’s dates, and exact timings must be included with your competition entry. Participants will be bound by their original selections.

* Competitions are subject to all rules and regulations on this page as well as the 2021 General Competition Information and Rules and Regulations. Incomplete entries will be subject to disqualification.

Those entering this competition may also may also be eligible to apply for the Frances Blaisdell Scholarship, which provides $1500 toward NFA convention expenses.
