Orchestral Audition & Masterclass Competition

The Orchestral Audition & Masterclass Competition is open to flutists who will be 30 years of age or younger by the last day of the convention (born on or after August 7, 1992). Entrants may be required to show proof of age. Three finalists will be chosen to perform a mock audition and perform in a masterclass for orchestral flutist and pedagogue Aralee Dorough at the 2023 NFA Convention in Phoenix. Cash prizes of $1,000, $750, and $400 will be awarded. Previous first-place winners of this competition are ineligible to compete.

Competition Requirements*

  • All flutists must be current NFA members at the time the entry is submitted. If chosen to perform or present during the convention, flutists must also be current members at the time of the convention and register for the convention by July 1, 2023. To join or renew, go to nfaonline.org/signup.

All entrants must submit their entry, upload recordings/supplemental materials, and pay competition and membership fees by 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time, Tuesday, February 14, 2023.

Recorded Round Repertoire

Each piece should be uploaded as a separate file in the following order. All uploaded files must be audio recordings. No videos are allowed.

  • Ludwig van Beethoven, Symphony No. 4, Mvt. 2, m. 64-72
  • Johannes Brahms, Symphony No. 1, Mvt. 4, m. 38-46
  • Gustav Mahler, Das Lied von der Erde, rehearsal #3 to rehearsal #4 and rehearsal #22 to rehearsal #23
  • Richard Strauss, Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks, Op. 28, rehearsal #6 until 3 measures before rehearsal #8
  • John Williams, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, “Hagrid’s Friendly Bird”, m. 129-151

All Recorded Round repertoire for this event must be recorded without any form of accompaniment.
