Piccolo Orchestral Audition & Masterclass Competition

2021 competitions are now closed. Repertoire requirements for next year are scheduled to be announced in August.

All 2021 NFA competitions will be held virtually!

The biennial Piccolo Orchestral Audition & Masterclass Competition is open to flutists who will be 30 years of age or younger by the last day of the convention (born on or after August 15, 1991). Entrants may be required to show proof of age. Three finalists will be chosen to perform a mock pre-recorded audition and perform in a masterclass during the 2021 NFA Convention. Cash prizes of $1,000, $750, and $400 will be awarded. Previous first-prize winners in this competition are ineligible to compete.

Competition Requirements*

• All flutists must be current NFA members at the time the entry is submitted. If chosen to perform or present during the convention, flutists must also be current members at the time of the convention and register for the convention by July 1, 2021. To join or renew, go to nfaonline.org/signup.

• $55 entry fee (paid during submission process)

All entrants must submit their entry, upload recordings/supplemental materials, and pay competition and membership fees by 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time, Sunday, February 28, 2021. 

Recorded Round Repertoire

Each piece should be uploaded as a separate file in the following order. All uploaded files must be audio recordings. No videos are allowed.

• Hector Berlioz, La Damnation de Faust (Piccolo 1), Menuet des Follets, Presto e Leggiero, 8th measure after rehearsal 9 to 14th measure after rehearsal 10
• Dmitri Shostakovich, Symphony No. 9, II. Moderato, 4th measure after rehearsal
• Maurice Ravel, Mother Goose Suite, III. Laideronette, impératrice des pagodes, rehearsal 1 to 5 measures after rehearsal 3
• Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 4, III. Scherzo: Pizzicato ostinato – Allegro, 2nd measure after rehearsal E to 3 measures before rehearsal G 

Accompaniment is not required for this competition.
