Piccolo Orchestral Audition & Masterclass Competition

The biennial Piccolo Orchestral Audition & Masterclass Competition is open to flutists who will be 30 years of age or younger by the last day of the convention (born on or after August 7, 1992). Entrants may be required to show proof of age. Three finalists will be chosen to perform a mock pre-recorded audition and perform in a masterclass for piccoloist Amal Gochenour at the 2023 NFA Convention in Phoenix. Cash prizes of $1,000, $750, and $400 will be awarded. Previous first-prize winners in this competition are ineligible to compete again in this event.

Competition Requirements*

  • All flutists must be current NFA members at the time the entry is submitted. If chosen to perform or present during the convention, flutists must also be current members at the time of the convention and register for the convention by July 1, 2021. To join or renew, go to nfaonline.org/signup.

All entrants must submit their entry, upload recordings/supplemental materials, and pay competition and membership fees by 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time, Tuesday, February 14, 2023. 

Recorded Round Repertoire

Each piece should be uploaded as a separate file in the following order. All uploaded files must be audio recordings. No videos are allowed.

  • Ludwig van Beethoven, Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125, Mvt. 4, m. 343-390
  • Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov, Caucasian Sketches, Mvt. 4 “Procession of the Sardar”, m. 3 to rehearsal B
  • Dmitri Shostakovich, Symphony No. 6, Mvt. 1, 4 before rehearsal 9 until rehearsal 10
  • Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 36, Mvt. 3, 2nd measure of rehearsal E to 3 measures before rehearsal G 

All Recorded Round repertoire for this event must be recorded without any form of accompaniment.

Those entering this competition may also may also be eligible to apply for the Frances Blaisdell Scholarship, which provides $1500 toward NFA convention expenses.
