Adult Amateur Competition

2021 competitions are now closed. Repertoire requirements for next year are scheduled to be announced in August.


All 2021 NFA competitions will be held virtually!

The Adult Amateur Competition is open to all flutists who do not make their primary income from music and do not hold a major degree in music. Two winners will be selected and will have the opportunity to be featured in an NFA virtual event in 2021. Entrants must be 25 years of age or older on February 28, 2021.

Competition Requirements*

  • $55 entry fee (paid during submission process)

All entrants must submit their entry, upload recordings/supplemental materials, and pay competition and membership fees by 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time, Sunday, February 28, 2021.

Recorded Round Repertoire

Each piece should be uploaded as a separate file. All uploaded files must be audio recordings. No videos are allowed.

Choose one piece from List A, and one piece from List B.

List A:

  • Mel Bonis, Sonata for Flute and Piano - any two movements
  • Paul Hindemith, Acht Stücke - any 4 movements 
  • Arthur Honegger, Danse de la Chèvre 
  • Robert Muczynski, 3 Preludes - all 3 movements
  • Paul Taffanel, Andante Pastorale et Scherzettino 

List B:

  • Adrienne Albert, Sunswept
  • Fran Griffin, Blackheath for solo flute - any one movement
  • Adolphus Hailstork, Yuhwa for Solo Flute
  • Will Linthicum-Blackhorse, Mnicakmun - any one movement
  • Germaine Tailleferre, Deuxième Sonata for flute and Piano - any one movement 

Due to the restrictions of COVID-19, all Recorded Round repertoire must be recorded without accompaniment.
