Junior Soloist Competition

2021 competitions are now closed. Repertoire requirements for next year are scheduled to be announced in August.

All 2021 NFA competitions will be held virtually!

The Junior Soloist Competition is open to outstanding young flutists. Finalists will be selected based on their recorded round audition to compete during the 2021 NFA Convention. Cash prizes of $500, $250, and $100 will be awarded to the finalists.

In addition to the finalists, flutists will be selected from the recorded round to participate in the Junior Masterclass during the 2021 NFA Convention. Other entrants may, upon unanimous recommendation from the recorded round judges, receive certificates of merit in recognition of the high quality of their work.

All entrants must:

• have been enrolled and in good standing as full time students in grades 6-8 or the equivalent during the 2020-2021 academic year.
• be between the ages of 11-15 on the first day of the convention. Entrants may be required to show proof of age.

Competition Requirements*

• All flutists must be current NFA members at the time the entry is submitted. If chosen to perform or present during the convention, flutists must also be current members at the time of the convention and register for the convention by July 1, 2021. To join or renew, go to nfaonline.org/signup.

All entrants must submit their entry, upload recordings/supplemental materials, and pay competition and membership fees by 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time, Sunday, February 28, 2021.

Recorded Round Repertoire 

Each piece should be uploaded as a separate file in the following order. Movements may be uploaded separately if you choose. All uploaded files must be audio recordings. No videos are allowed.

• George Frideric Handel, Sonata in C Major, Op. 1, No. 7, HWV 365, IV. A tempo di Gavotta (take all repeats) (Barenreiter)
• Philippe Gaubert, Madrigal for Flute and Piano (any edition) 
  

Due to the restrictions of COVID-19, all repertoire must be recorded without piano accompaniment.

Final Round Repertoire

This repertoire will be presented during the 2021 NFA Convention in the order of the finalist’s choosing.

• Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Sonata No. 1 (violin) in Bb Major, Op. 1a No. 1, I. Allegro (no repeats, finalists will receive edits) (any edition)
