Five Questions with Karissa Krenz, Publications Director

Five Questions_Karissa

As Publications Director, Karissa Krenz works hard to bring you The Flutist Quarterly (FQ) and our convention's program book. We asked her five quick questions so you can get to know her!

Get to know Karissa Krenz, Publications Director: Karissa has spent her entire career in the performing arts, and has spent the majority of that as an editor and writer for an array of organizations and individuals.

How long have you been with the NFA? What drew you to the organization?
(Technically two questions, I know!)

I joined during COVID—I jumped at the chance to work with a new organization, and I liked the idea of the challenge of taking on FQ during a transformative period.

Are you a flutist (or musician)? Tell us about your relationship to music!

I played the flute from elementary school into college, but moved on to other things when I decided to major music history. I'm one of those people who tried a lot of things—I played the cello, sax, harpsichord, and sang, and did a lot of composing!

Tell us about your job - what's a typical day like?
I spend most of the day hunkered down at my computer playing with words. It's lovely to work on shaping articles with people—it's the best part of the job!

Do you listen to music while you work?

If so, tell us what's on your workday playlist!

I'm a radio fan (no algorithms for me!). I mainly listen to BBC 6 Music, primarily because its eclectic mix of alt rock and indie (and sometimes jazz and alt classical) is just what I need to keep me going.

What's your favorite memory from an NFA convention?

Just chatting away and making new friends!

The NFA, I believe, is an amazing hub of a worldwide flute community where members living outside the U.S., like myself, are given equal opportunities. I have met so many wonderful people from all over the world through the NFA. Come on and join us! Let’s play together!”
