Meet the Composers:

Henry Bransdorfer
Commissioned by the NFA Idea Committee

A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Henry Bransdorfer is a flutist-composer based in Tokyo, Japan.

As a composer, the first movement of his work Vignettes was performed by the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony at their May concert in 2017. In 2018, his work Something… for flutes was selected by the National Flute Association as the grand prize winner of the Flute Choir Composition Competition. The work was premiered at the NFA convention in Orlando, Florida the same year. It later received its Asian premiere in Hiroshima, Japan at the Elisabeth University of Music’s Flute Orchestra Concert in December 2022.

During his studies in Japan, he was also selected to compose music to accompany a picture book about the life of American peace-activist Floyd Schmoe, which was premiered in October 2022. Among his most recent works, his Concerto for Guitar or Koto and Chamber Orchestra was premiered with three different soloists in July 2023.

As a performer, he has performed with orchestras across Asia, Europe, and the United States. During his undergraduate studies at the University of Hawaii, he played piccolo with the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra in the All Nippon Airways Music Week 2019. In his time at the University of Hawaii, he also performed in a masterclass taught by South Korean flutist Jasmine Choi. Other flute masterclass teachers include Amy Porter, Mark Sparks, and Valerie Coleman. His composition teachers include Richard Adams, Takuma Itoh, and Osamu Kawakami. His flute teachers include Judith Kemph, Chris Kantner, and Jean Ferrandis

The Proposed Work:

"My idea for the work is a set of four miniatures each between 1-2 minutes, representing an important American activist from the 20th century: Native American activist Russell Means, peace activist Floyd Schmoe, African American activist Rosa Parks, and LGBTQ rights activist Marsha P. Johnson."

Erin Spencer
Commissioned by the NFA Low Flutes Committee
Colorado flutist Erin Spencer is an educator, performer, and composer based out of Colorado Springs where she lives with her spouse, two kids, and studio mascot, Eevee the two-legged cat. She owns and operates Spencer Music Studio and directs the Pikes Peak Flute Choir. Erin serves as the Composer-in-Residence for the Little Flute Magazine. While she has enjoyed arranging music since middle school, the wonderful response to her piece "Somewhere Bluebirds Fly" spurred a career shift towards composing more original music. Her influences as a composer include Hiromi, Dave Malloy, Joe Hisaishi, and her teacher, Dr. Stefan Freund. Erin earned her Master's in Flute Performance from the University of Missouri where she studied with Alice Dade.

The Proposed Work:
"I was fortunate to witness the awe-inspiring total solar eclipses of 2017 and 2024...Knowing I won’t experience another eclipse for 20 years drives me to capture this indescribable phenomenon through music—conveying the emotions that words cannot fully express...To achieve this, I will compose a piece titled Totality, centered on the interplay of two themes: the 'sun' theme and the 'moon' theme."
