Call for Proposals

Commissioning New Works for Flute Choir

The NFA invites proposals from composers interested in writing new works for flute ensemble. We currently have TWO open calls for proposals:
  • The Low Flutes Committee is seeking proposals for a 6-minute work using alto, bass and contra flutes. Optional Sub-contra part will be accepted.
  • The Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (I.D.E.A.) Committee is seeking proposals for a 6-minute piece with the following instrumentation: 2 piccolos, 6 C flutes, 3 alto flutes, 2 bass flutes, 1 contra alto, and 1 contra bass.
Detailed guidelines and instructions can be found below. These commissions are funded by the NFA General Endowment.
Timeline:
  • November 15, 2024: “Call for Proposals” opens for submissions
  • January 15, 2025: Deadline for Proposals to be submitted
  • May 1, 2025: Winner will be announced
  • February 1, 2026: Composition will be completed. Full score and parts sent to the appropriate committee.
  • August 6-9, 2026: Performance at the NFA Convention in Portland, OR with composer present, if accepted for performance. 

  • Winner will receive a $4500 commission to write a new work for the NFA Low Flutes Committee to be proposed for the 2026 NFA Convention. Winner will be paid 50% when the contract is signed, Spring 2025 and 50% upon completion and distribution of the composition.
  • Deadline: Applications will be accepted through 11:59 PM Central time on January 15, 2025.
  • Winner will be announced on April 10, 2025.
  • There is no application fee.
  • Composers aged 18 and over as of January 15, 2025 of any nationality may apply.
  • Please write a short description of the piece you would consider composing for the NFA Low Flutes Committee if your proposal is selected. We are asking for a work that offers accessibility for smaller or larger flute ensembles. Collegiate or professional level composition is preferred. New piece only, no transcriptions.
  • Length of composition: 6 minutes
  • Instrumentation: 5-6 parts using alto, bass and contra flutes. Optional Sub-contra part will be accepted.
  • Please submit sample scores and recordings of two of your existing compositions (audio or video) with a link via Dropbox, YouTube, Soundcloud, Google Drive, your own website, or the equivalent, below. Two scores with recordings of recent works that include at least one flute in the instrumentation. If you do not have many works with prominent flute parts, we encourage you to share the works that best represent your abilities and style as a composer.
    • MIDI realizations are acceptable if no other recording is available.
    • Scores must be in PDF format.
    • Score and sound recording links should be to individual files or tracks, not a folder full of files or a webpage with multiple scores, etc. 
    • Please test your link from a different web browser or ask a friend to test them for you in order to make sure that your link can be accessed by anyone with the link and that there is no login required. 
    • Please keep the links accessible through May 1, 2025.
  • If you did not receive an email confirming receipt of your application, or for questions, please contact LOW FLUTES COMMITTEE CONTACT, jkdflute@gmail.com
  • All applicants will be notified by May 1 regarding the status of their application.

The fine print:

  • Incomplete applications or applications with broken links will be disqualified. 
  • The winner will deliver the final six-minute commissioned work by February 1, 2026.
  • Those who have received commissions from the NFA in the past are not eligible for this Call for Proposals.
  • NFA Low Flutes Committee members may not enter the competition; likewise, their spouses, domestic partners and relatives may not enter the competition.
  • If the work is programmed on the 2026 convention, you (the composer) agree to be present will be responsible for your own travel expenses.
