NFA Competition Information


2021 competitions will be held virtually, providing an opportunity for more flutists than ever to enter. All recorded round submissions will be performed without accompaniment.

2021 General Competition Information, Rules and Regulations.

The National Flute Association holds 22 competitions to reward outstanding performers, composers, publishers, scholars, and entrepreneurs. Among these are 18 performance competitions to select outstanding flutists to perform at the NFA convention as well as 4 non-performance competitions.

2021 General Competition Information, Rules and Regulations.

The NFA will hold 16 competitions for its 49th annual convention in Washington, DC, August 12-15, 2021. All competitions will be virtual for the first time! Any entry submitted in February shall be performed without accompaniment; those selected will receive guidance regarding possible accompaniment requirements in future rounds. Please review the information below as well as the information for the specific competition that you wish to enter.

Submission deadline is Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time.

NFA Membership and Convention Registration

All flutists must be current NFA members at the time the entry is submitted. If chosen to perform or present at the convention, flutists must also be current members at the time of the convention and register for the convention by July 1, 2021. To join or renew, go to nfaonline.org/signup

Submission Process 
Contestants must complete a separate entry for each competition they wish to enter.

The entry form, recordings/supplemental materials, and fees must be submitted by Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time.

Competition Recordings/Supplemental Materials
Editing a recording, including studio-produced effects, or talking during a recording is strictly prohibited.

Do not post your competition recordings/supplemental materials on social media sites (Facebook, YouTube, etc.) prior to May 1, 2021.

No repertoire substitutions will be accepted. Carefully read all details related to required selections, including keys, opus numbers, movements, and publishers.

Competition Information
Convention recordings may become part of the NFA archives.

Contestants are expected to demonstrate the ability to represent the NFA in a professional manner, and shall exhibit appropriate behavior, attitude and demeanor toward judges, fellow contestants and others, and may be evaluated on those qualities.

Contestants may not contact or communicate in any way, directly or indirectly, with any competition judge before the competition commences or at any time prior to the announcement of the contest winners.

Competitions are subject to all rules and regulations on this page as well as the provisions stated on each individual applicable competition page.

Decisions of the judges are final.

NFA will notify competition entrants by e-mail in late April concerning their status.

Failure to abide by the rules and regulations above may result in disqualification from the competition.
